Graduation season has come and gone amidst the soft rain falling outside. It was a day of the ending of a chapter, but also the beginning of a new one, and we would like to say congratulations to our F5 seniors for reaching this milestone.

During the graduation ceremony, we performed a medley of songs from the Disney classic “Aladdin” to entertain the graduates and their parents. Near the end of the ceremony, we also performed the song “Mayday Medley” as an encore with our F5s.

Lastly, we would like to wish all our graduating seniors a happy graduation and success in whichever endeavours they would pursue.

Thanks for everything.

After three years, we finally took part in the Malaysia International Music and Arts Festival (MIMAF) again. Our band members were very excited and looking forward to it since it was most members’ first indoor competition at Genting Highlands. Determined to do our best, we have been practising hard and attentively on our two songs: Centuria and Oliver’s March. We did our best and achieved a Gold award for full band and woodwinds ensemble and a Gold with Honour award for brass ensemble.

As always, we would like to thank our teacher advisor Ms Looi Ling Ling, our president, conductor, drum major and all helpers that helped a lot in this event.

Graduation isn’t the end of a tough journey. It is the beginning of a beautiful one… It’s the graduation season. On the 20th of October 2018, we bid goodbye to our form 5 and form 6 seniors as they graduated from our school. As a celebration for their graduation, we performed the song “Selections from The Greatest Showman” from the movie “The Greatest Showman”. The sweet and lively song was performed to entertain our guests and graduates. At the end of the graduation ceremony, we performed the song “Princess Mononoke” with our form 5 and form 6 seniors. We also got to perform the song “Those Days” – a warm and romantic Chinese song with Chinese Orchestra from our school. It was a blue yet memorable day for us. We’re so happy that they’ve achieved this great milestone- Wishing them great success with their dreams and career.

Time: 2pm- 10pm

Venue: Stadium Bandaraya Pulau Pinang

This was the 1st Asia Pacific Master Games in Penang, Malaysia which was held from 7-15 September. It was organised by the International Master Games Association (IMGA), and it was the first ever Masters Games for the Asia-Pacific region. Our school band was both glad and honoured to be invited to perform on the opening ceremony.

As this day approached, although we were nervous, we significantly tried our very best to present to the audiences the most melodious and harmonious tune of the band. However, what was truly important was still the bond between our band and the precious memories created. Lastly, we would like to thank the teachers and helpers for always being with us throughout this memorable event.

Time: 6am – 12.30pm

Venue: Esplanade

August 31st is a significant day in many ways. For one, it’s a celebration of independence for our country. This year, our school band proudly took part in the annual Merdeka Parade. It was an overwhelming experience to be a part of the 150 contingents marching on that day, and we kept our heads high and our footsteps sharp. The song we performed while marching was titled  ‘Seni Teras Perpaduan’.

The road leading up to this day was not easy, but our members persevered even through the unpredictable weather and countless marching practices. Even then, on the actual day of the parade, it was raining heavily. But we didn’t lose hope, and soon enough, the weather cleared and we were allowed to march. The feeling of marching past the grandstands was exhilarating, and we left this event with many new memories to treasure.

As always, we’d like to sincerely thank all the ex-seniors who came back to lend us a hand, all the helpers who ran up and down for us, and our teacher advisor, Ms Looi Ling Ling, for her constant care and concern.

… and it did, and we were told to make our way to our allocated space.

Warming up by the docks.

Standing at parade rest, waiting for our signal.

Moving out.

Marching out into the main route, heads held high.

Marching past the State Legislative Assembly hall.

Reaching the grandstands and playing with all our might.

A merdeka day to remember.

Venue: Auditorium, School Hall

One night, one band, one music, one sound. That was the result of all our hard work and effort in preparing for our school’s annual concert night. This event was held to raise funds for our school’s new building, and we promptly gave it our all. Under our student conductor, Loo Si Jing, we performed two songs: Princess Mononoke Medley and Hawaii Five-o. All in all, it was a magical night, and we treasured every moment of it, especially since this would be our last performance with our Form 5 seniors.

Date: 24/7/2018

Time: 3pm – 6pm

Venue: Dewan Sri Pinang

After more than a month’s delay, the long awaited indoor competition finally arrived. We did our best, putting in all our effort into this competition. The songs we used in the competition this year were “Warabe Uta – Fantasy” and “Hujan Ditengah Hari”, a famous Malay song by Tan Sri P. Ramlee. At the end of the day, regretfully, we achieved a Silver award for our efforts. But with that in mind, we will continue to work harder in the future to achieve better results.

As always, we would also like to thank all of our helpers and our teacher advisor, Ms. Looi Ling Ling, for their constant care and concern every step of the way.

June 30th, 2018 by PCGHS Band

Date: 29/6/2018

Time: 6am – 1pm

Venue: Auditorium, School field

When we arrived at the school in the morning, we were greeted by pouring rain that showed no signs of stopping soon. Suffice to say, it was an interesting day filled with many ups and downs.

Penang Chinese Girls’ High School Annual Sports Day was held on the 29th of June 2018. During that day, we competed against the other uniformed groups in the parade marching competition and performed the song “Frozen Parade Sequence”  accompanied by a formation drill. Our band members have all worked hard during every practice, challenging every obstacle to achieve our goal. It was a race against time since the start of January to June: we had to prepare for our formation and polish our parade marching at the same time. On the actual day, even when it rained heavily outside, we kept our heads high and remained determined to do our best.

And we were successful — we defended our title as champion for the ninth consecutive year. Although we faced many challenges along the way, rain or shine, we never gave up. We would also like to give a shoutout to our teacher advisor, Ms Looi Ling Ling for her constant care (and herbal tea), as well as to our drum major, Ooi Xue Er, and student conductor, Loo Si Jing for yet another victory on the field.

“Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.” – Colin Powell

Getting ready and making all the necessary preparations.

Lining up outside the auditorium, ready to go and do our best come what may.

Because of the rain, the decision was made to hold the opening ceremony in the school hall.

But when the rain cleared, and we were told that the scheduled competition would continue.

It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to perform on the field. We’re determined to do our best.

The most beautiful moment of the day.

Time: 7am – 9am

Date: 4/02/2018

Venue: Armenia Street

Last Sunday, just as dawn was breaking, thirteen of us were assembled outside Cheah Kongsi, Armenia Street. It was a whole new experience for us. We would be performing for the many runners in the ‘I Love Penang’ Walk, organised by Occupy Beach Street. It was a completely eye-opening experience to play many different songs outside a famous building in Penang’s heritage area. Although trying, this unforgettable event ended on a high note for us and proved to be an amazing learning experience.

We performed a variety of pop songs too, including hits such as ‘Closer’, ‘Drag Me Down’ and others.

Music from How to Train Your Dragon also made an appearance that morning.

Lastly, a group photo to celebrate this memorable event.
