Date: 25-29/11/2019

Time: 8am – 1pm

Venue: First World Hotel, Genting Highlands

The start of the school holidays meant the start of the annual Music International Music and Arts Festival (MIMAF). After four months of practices, our band members were finally ready to face the competition. It was both an exciting and terrifying event at the same time; our members were very excited as they were able to stay in Genting Highlands with their friends for 5 days and 4 nights, while it was a nerve-racking experience for our newer members as this was their first competition. There were two songs that we presented during the competition: Concerto D’Amore and Ammerland. Our blood, sweat and tears paid off when we achieved Gold awards for the full band, brass ensemble and woodwinds ensemble categories. Our percussion ensemble also managed to score a Silver award.

The band members would like to thank our teacher advisor Ms Looi Ling Ling , the teachers who accompanied us throughout the whole event, our president, conductors, drum major and as always, all the helpers. We were glad that they were there to help us every step of the way.

After three years, we finally took part in the Malaysia International Music and Arts Festival (MIMAF) again. Our band members were very excited and looking forward to it since it was most members’ first indoor competition at Genting Highlands. Determined to do our best, we have been practising hard and attentively on our two songs: Centuria and Oliver’s March. We did our best and achieved a Gold award for full band and woodwinds ensemble and a Gold with Honour award for brass ensemble.

As always, we would like to thank our teacher advisor Ms Looi Ling Ling, our president, conductor, drum major and all helpers that helped a lot in this event.

Time: 3pm – 6pm

Venue: Dewan Sri Pinang

After more than a month’s delay, the long awaited indoor competition finally arrived. We did our best, putting in all our effort into this competition. The songs we used in the competition this year were “Warabe Uta – Fantasy” and “Hujan Ditengah Hari”, a famous Malay song by Tan Sri P. Ramlee. At the end of the day, regretfully, we achieved a Silver award for our efforts. But with that in mind, we will continue to work harder in the future to achieve better results.

As always, we would also like to thank all of our helpers and our teacher advisor, Ms. Looi Ling Ling, for their constant care and concern every step of the way.

Time: 6am – 1pm

Venue: Auditorium, School field

When we arrived at the school in the morning, we were greeted by pouring rain that showed no signs of stopping soon. Suffice to say, it was an interesting day filled with many ups and downs.

Penang Chinese Girls’ High School Annual Sports Day was held on the 29th of June 2018. During that day, we competed against the other uniformed groups in the parade marching competition and performed the song “Frozen Parade Sequence”  accompanied by a formation drill. Our band members have all worked hard during every practice, challenging every obstacle to achieve our goal. It was a race against time since the start of January to June: we had to prepare for our formation and polish our parade marching at the same time. On the actual day, even when it rained heavily outside, we kept our heads high and remained determined to do our best.

And we were successful — we defended our title as champion for the ninth consecutive year. Although we faced many challenges along the way, rain or shine, we never gave up. We would also like to give a shoutout to our teacher advisor, Ms Looi Ling Ling for her constant care (and herbal tea), as well as to our drum major, Ooi Xue Er, and student conductor, Loo Si Jing for yet another victory on the field.

“Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.” – Colin Powell

Getting ready and making all the necessary preparations.

Lining up outside the auditorium, ready to go and do our best come what may.

Because of the rain, the decision was made to hold the opening ceremony in the school hall.

But when the rain cleared, and we were told that the scheduled competition would continue.

It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to perform on the field. We’re determined to do our best.

The most beautiful moment of the day.

Time: 6am – 1pm

Location: Auditorium, Field

As another year passes by, so arrives the annual Penang Chinese Girls’ High School Sports Day. This year’s Sports Day was held on 22nd June 2017. As per usual, we competed against many other uniformed groups in the parade competition. We also performed two songs to entertain the audience present; the first was “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s “Moana” while the second was “Timber” by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha.

It was a long journey, preparing for this year’s Sports Day. Our hard-earned victory wasn’t a situation where you get struck by a single lightning bolt and voila! This journey started in December 2016, when we first started practicing marching after a long hiatus. Throughout the start of the year, we have been diligently preparing and practicing. Even with the indoor competition in April drawing closer, we never ceased our hard work, putting all our efforts into both the coming competition and the approaching Sports Day.

When the decision was made to include the juniors in marching for Sports Day, we never once wavered and strode forward to accept the challenge. It wasn’t easy, training our Form 1 juniors who had no prior experience in marching. But together, we kept practicing and trying countless times, putting in long hours under the hot sun, polishing and honing our skills. Our determination and hard work led us to where we are now, proudly carrying home the title of being the champion in the parade marching competition for the 8th consecutive year.

Our heartfelt thanks go to our teacher adviser, Ms Looi Ling Ling, for her care and encouragement, and also to our drum major Loh Wan Ling and student conductor Wong Ke Ying for leading us to yet another victory on the field.

“Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and griefs we endure help us march forward.” – Henry Ford

PCGHS Band for the win!

May 1st, 2017 by PCGHS Band

It showed that all the hard work and all the sacrifice paid off; if you put your mind to it and you believe it, you can achieve it. More than anything, I’m grateful that I got the opportunity to go for this competition again. It made all the hard work and everything I put in over the last two years pay off. A gift of that value is a reward for a season of hard work. – Maeve Tan K3E Trombone

We got gold! All of our hard work has paid off. This has been a wonderful learning experience for me as I learnt a lot of new things and improved my playing technique. I hope that next year we can participate in the competition again. Also… the Dewan Sri Pinang is big! – Lim Ying Ying K2B Trombone

- Hong Jing Ling K1F Percussion

The Penang Chinese Girls High School Annual Sports Day was held on the 21st of June 2016. Our school band was honoured to have lead the opening for the sports day. We competed against the many different uniform bodies in our school in the parade competition.

Other than that, we also performed a collection of songs to entertain everyone that was present that day. It was a successful performance as the whole student body continuously cheered for us during our performance. We performed a formation drill accompanied by the song “Distorted” which was arranged by our instructor Mr Khoo Wei Keat. Our percussions also impressed the audience with a short percussion solo. The performance ended with the songs “Hello” by Adele and “Try Everything” from the 2016 hit animation “Zootopia”.

At the end of the day, we proudly took home the Champion trophy from winning first place in the parade competition. This year has marked the 8th time in a row our band has got the champion trophy in the school sports day parade competition. Our seniors and ex-seniors all hope the pcghs band will continue working hard in the years to come.

The band would like to show their appreciation to our teacher advisor, Ms Looi Ling Ling for her constant care towards us. And also our drum major, Kang Yee Ming and student conductor, Phoebe Kho for leading us to our glorious win.
